বিড়াল একটি অতি পরিচিত গৃহপালিত প্রাণী। এই বিড়াল সম্পর্কে পৃথিবীর প্রায় সবখানেই অনেক গুজব চালু আছে। যেমন, অনেকেরই বিশ্বাস বিড়ালের নাকি নয়টা প্রাণ । আবার কারো ধারণা, কালো বিড়াল অশুভ। মধ্যযুগে ইউরোপে তো বিড়ালকে ঘৃণার চোখে দেখা হতো । তবে বিড়াল যে অলস ও আরামপ্রিয়, সে কথা আমরা সবাই জানি । বিড়াল দিনের অধিকাংশ সময় ঘুমিয়ে কাটিয়ে দেয় । কিছু কিছু বিড়ালকে রাতের বেলা শিকার করতে দেখা যায় । তোমরা তো জানোই, বিড়ালের চিরশত্রু হচ্ছে ইঁদুর। রাতের বেলা অনেক সময় বিড়াল ইঁদুর শিকারে বের হয় ।

কিন্তু রাতের অন্ধকারে বিড়ালকে চলাফেরা করতে দেখে অনেকের ধারণা, বিড়াল রাতের অন্ধকারে দেখতে পায়। মনে রাখা দরকার এই তথ্যটি আংশিক সত্য। আসলে বিড়াল পুরোপুরি অন্ধকার রাতে কিছুই দেখতে পায় না। কিন্তু খুব সামান্য পরিমাণ আলো থাকলেই বিড়ালের জন্য যথেষ্ট। এরকম আলোয় মানুষ কিছুই দেখতে পাবে না । তবে বিড়াল এসব ক্ষেত্রে অনেক ভালো দেখতে পায় । কারণ বিড়ালের চোখের রেটিনার পেছনে আছে টাপেটাম নামে একটি অংশ। বাইরে থেকে আসা সামান্য পরিমাণ আলো টাপেটামে প্রতিফলিত হয়ে চোখের কোন কোষে আঘাত করে। টাপেটাম থেকে কোন্ কোষে প্রতিফলিত হবার সময় আলো কিছুটা বর্ধিত হয় । ফলে বিড়াল স্বল্প আলোতেও স্পষ্টভাবে দেখতে পায়। অন্ধকারে বিড়ালের চোখ জ্বলজ্বল করে এই টাপেটামের কারণেই । 

টাপেটাম বিড়ালকে স্বল্প আলোয় ভালোভাবে দেখতে সাহায্য করলেও আরও কিছু বৈশিষ্ট্য বিড়ালকে অন্ধকারে চলতে সাহায্য করে। 

বিড়ালের ঘ্রাণশক্তি ও শ্রবণশক্তি বেশ প্রখর । আর এগুলোই বিড়ালকে অন্ধকারে শিকার খুঁজে নিতে বা নিরাপদে চলাচল করতে অনেকটা সাহায্য করে। তাই পুরোপুরি অন্ধকার রাতেও বিড়াল এসবের ওপর নির্ভর করে পথ চলতে পারে

Some people think that black cats are evil. In medieval Europe, cats were looked down upon. But we all know that cats are lazy and comfortable. Cats spend most of the day sleeping. Some cats are seen hunting at night. You know, mice are the eternal enemy of cats. Many times at night, cats go out to hunt mice.

But seeing the cat moving in the darkness of the night, many think that the cat can see in the darkness of the night. It should be noted that this information is partially true. In fact, cats can't see anything in a completely dark night. But a very small amount of light is enough for cats. People will not be able to see anything in such light. However, cats can see very well in these cases. Because behind the retina of the cat's eye is a part called the tapetum. A small amount of light from the outside is reflected by the tapetum and hits the cells of the eye. Light is slightly amplified when it is reflected from the tapetum to a cell. As a result, cats can see clearly even in dim light. The cat's eyes glow in the dark because of this tapetum.

While the tapetum helps cats see well in low light, other features help cats navigate in the dark.

A cat's sense of smell and hearing are very keen. And these help the cat to find prey in the dark or to move safely. So even in a completely dark night, cats can rely on these to navigate
